Early Life and Sports
Tommie Campbell grew up in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania. When he was in Aliquippa High School, he was a fantastic athlete. He played football, basketball, and ran track. In 2005, he even won the state championship for sprinting in high school.
College Football Journey
Tommie started his college football career at Pitt in 2005. He later played at Edinboro University in 2007. During this time, he faced some challenges with his studies, which affected his ability to keep playing.
For a couple of years, from 2008 to 2009, Tommie worked as a janitor at Pittsburgh International Airport. This experience helped him realize how much he wanted to play football.
He got a third chance to play college football at California University of Pennsylvania. Tommie made the most of this opportunity. He played in all 12 games for the California (PA) team. His coach, John Luckhardt, noted that Tommie had matured a lot.
Tommie was very thankful to Coach Luckhardt for believing in him. He said that California (PA) gave him another shot at his dream of playing in the NFL. Because of his great comeback in 2010, Tommie was one of only eight players from Division II to play in the 2011 Eastham Energy All-Star Game. He also played in the Cactus Bowl, another All-Star game for Division II players. At the Cactus Bowl, Tommie ran a very fast 40-yard dash, finishing in 4.31 seconds. This was one of the fastest times among all the players there.
Professional Football Career
Tennessee Titans
The Tennessee Titans chose Tommie in the seventh round of the 2011 NFL draft. In 2012, during a game against the Detroit Lions, something exciting happened. His teammate, Darius Reynaud, caught a punt and then threw the ball sideways to Tommie. Tommie then ran 65 yards for a touchdown! This play was very similar to the famous "Music City Miracle." The Titans won that game 44–41 in overtime. Tommie was released by the Titans in August 2014.
Jacksonville Jaguars
Tommie then signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He joined the team after another cornerback, Alan Ball, got an injury that ended his season. Tommie was with the Jaguars until August 2015.
Calgary Stampeders
In 2016, Tommie joined the Calgary Stampeders in the Canadian Football League (CFL). He started in all 18 games that season. He made 71 tackles and had 3 interceptions. One of his interceptions was a game-winning play in overtime against the BC Lions. He was also named a West Division all-star for his excellent performance. Tommie returned to play for the Stampeders in 2017.
Montreal Alouettes
Tommie signed with the Montreal Alouettes on February 13, 2018. He was considered one of the best free agents available because he had not allowed a touchdown during the 2017 season. In September 2018, Tommie and the Alouettes agreed to a new contract that would keep him with the team until 2020.
In the 2018 season, Tommie played in 17 games. He made 38 tackles, had 1 interception, and forced one fumble. He missed one game during the season due to a team rule. Even though the Alouettes did not make the playoffs, Tommie and the team's defense helped them improve their record.
In 2019, Tommie started the season strong, causing 3 turnovers in the first 4 games. He played in 16 games, making 66 tackles, 3 interceptions, and two forced fumbles. He was again named a divisional All-Star. The Alouettes released him in January 2020.
Toronto Argonauts
On February 5, 2020, Tommie Campbell signed with the Toronto Argonauts. He announced that he was retiring from football on December 30, 2020.
