Where Toney's Brook Starts and Flows
Many people believe Toney's Brook was named after Anthony Oliff. He lived in the area a long time ago. The brook begins in the town of Montclair. It starts near the Upper Montclair train station.
The brook has two main branches in Montclair. These branches flow on both sides of the elevated train tracks. Other smaller streams also join Toney's Brook in Montclair.
Its Journey Through Towns
As Toney's Brook flows, it passes through several important places in Montclair. These include Anderson Park, Edgemont Memorial Park, and the grounds of Montclair High School. It also flows through Glenfield Park.
From Glenfield Park, the brook continues its journey southeast. It enters the town of Glen Ridge. Here, it flows through a special area known as The Glen. This beautiful glen is actually what the town of Glen Ridge is named after!
After Glen Ridge, Toney's Brook flows into the town of Bloomfield. In Bloomfield, it reaches Watsessing Park. This is where Toney's Brook finally joins the Second River.
Hidden Parts of the Brook
Over the years, many roads and buildings have been built in the area. Because of this, parts of Toney's Brook are now covered up. Some sections flow through underground pipes called culverts. Other parts have been changed into straight channels, which is called being canalized.
History of Toney's Brook
In the 1800s and early 1900s, Toney's Brook was very important for local businesses. Its flowing water powered several mills. These mills used the brook's energy to make many different products.
For example, some mills produced lumber from trees. Other mills made beer or special fabrics like calico. There were also mills that created brass fittings, which are small metal parts. Some even made pasteboard boxes. The brook helped these businesses grow and thrive in the area.
