Discovering Tongrenelle
Tongrenelle is a quiet and historic place in Belgium. It is known for its peaceful countryside and a special old building. This building has a long and interesting past.
The Historic Ferme-Château
One of the most important places in Tongrenelle is the Ferme-Château de Tongrenelle. A "ferme-château" means a farm-castle. This shows that it was once a strong castle that also had farm buildings.
A Castle's Long History
Records show that a castle stood on this spot as early as 1209. Imagine how many stories those walls could tell!
Role in the Battle of Ligny
The castle played a part in a famous historical event. This was the Battle of Ligny on June 16, 1815. During this battle, the castle was a strong point. Soldiers from the Prussian army used it as a defense.
From Castle to Manor House
After the battle, the castle slowly fell apart. By the mid-1800s, it was in bad condition. In 1860, the old castle was taken down. What you see today is a beautiful manor house. It has a moat, which is a ditch filled with water around it. The buildings that stand there now were built in the 1600s and 1700s.
