Tongrinne (which is Tongrene in the local Walloon language) is a small village in Wallonia, a region in Belgium. It is part of the larger area called Sombreffe. You can find Tongrinne in the province of Namur.

Tongrinne used to be its own separate town. But in 1977, many Belgian towns joined together. This made Tongrinne a district of Sombreffe. The village is located right next to the Ligny river.

A Look Back in Time

The Battle of Ligny

Tongrinne played a part in a very important battle long ago. On June 16, 1815, a big fight called the Battle of Ligny happened here. The left side of the Prussian Army, led by General Blücher, was positioned in Tongrinne.

Even though the Prussians held their ground in Tongrinne, their main army was defeated at Ligny. This was Napoleon's last victory ever! At the same time, another battle was happening nearby at Quatre Bras. Here, the armies of Wellington and Marshal Ney were fighting.

Because the Prussians lost at Ligny, they had to leave Tongrinne during the night. Just two days later, the same armies met again at the famous Battle of Waterloo.
