Tony Alford, born on November 27, 1968, is an American college football coach. He currently works as the running backs coach and run game coordinator for the University of Michigan. He started these roles in 2024. Alford has been an assistant coach in college football for over 30 years. Before joining the Michigan Wolverines, he coached at Ohio State.

Playing Football in College
Tony Alford finished high school at Doherty High School in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He had moved there for his senior year from Kent, Ohio. After high school, he played college football for Colorado State from 1987 to 1990.
Achievements as a Player
Alford was a very good player at Colorado State. In 1989, he ran for 1,035 yards. This was during his junior year, under coach Earle Bruce. That same year, he was named first-team all-Western Athletic Conference. He also received an honorable mention All-America award from USA Today. In 1990, he was nominated for the Doak Walker Award, which goes to the best college running back.
After College Football
After graduating, Alford was part of the preseason team for the Denver Broncos in the National Football League (NFL). He also played for the Birmingham Fire in the World League of American Football (WLAF).
Coaching Career Highlights
Tony Alford has a long and successful coaching career. He has worked with many well-known head coaches. These include Dan McCarney, Steve Kragthorpe, Rick Neuheisel, Charlie Weis, Brian Kelly, Urban Meyer, Ryan Day, and Sherrone Moore.

As a coach, Alford has helped many players become successful. Some of the talented players he has coached include J. K. Dobbins, Ezekiel Elliott, Mike Weber, Michael Floyd, and Victor Anderson.

In 2011, Alford was recognized for his skill in finding new players. He was a finalist for the national recruiter of the year award by 247Sports.com. This shows how good he is at bringing new talent to college teams.

Tony Alford is married to his wife, Trina. They have three sons named Rylan, Kyler, and Braydon.
