Early Life and Education
Tony Messner was born in Melbourne, Victoria. He went to primary school in Queensland. Later, he attended Pulteney Grammar School in Adelaide. He also studied at the South Australian Institute of Technology. There, he trained to become an accountant.
Political Career
Tony Messner had a long career in Australian politics. He represented the state of South Australia.
Serving as a Senator
In 1975, Tony Messner was elected as a Senator. A Senator is a member of one of Australia's two main law-making groups, called the Parliament. He represented South Australia in the Senate. He served as a Senator for many years.
Role as a Minister
In November 1980, Tony Messner became a government minister. He was appointed the Minister for Veterans' Affairs. This job meant he was in charge of looking after people who had served in the military. He held this important role until March 1983. At that time, the government he was part of, led by Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser, lost the election. Tony Messner left Parliament in April 1990.
