Early Life and Education
Trace Adkins was born in Sarepta, Louisiana. His parents are Peggy Carraway and Aaron Doyle Adkins. He became interested in music at a young age. When he was ten, his father bought him a guitar and arranged for him to have lessons.
At Sarepta High School, Adkins was part of a gospel music group called the New Commitments. He was also a member of the FFA. After high school, he went to Louisiana Tech University. He played offensive lineman on the football team but had to stop after a knee injury.
Adkins did not finish college. He worked on an oil rig and played music in a band called Bayou. He also worked as a pharmacy technician. He had an accident where he lost his pinky finger on his left hand. Doctors reattached it at an angle so he could still play guitar.
He spent several years playing in honky tonk bars. In 1992, he moved to Nashville, Tennessee, to pursue his music dream. In 1994, he met Rhonda Forlaw, who worked in the music industry. She helped him get noticed. Scott Hendricks from Capitol Nashville signed him to a record deal after hearing him play.
