Tracy S. Letts (born July 4, 1965) is an American actor, playwright, and screenwriter. He is known for his amazing work in theater, movies, and TV shows. He started his career at the famous Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago.

Tracy Letts became well-known when he wrote the play August: Osage County in 2007. For this play, he won two very important awards: the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Play. The Pulitzer Prize is a top award for writing, and the Tony Award is the highest honor for plays on Broadway. As an actor, he also won a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play for his role in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? in 2013.

Early Life and First Steps

Letts was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on July 4, 1965. His mother, Billie Letts, was a writer, and his father, Dennis Letts, was a college professor and actor. He grew up in Durant, Oklahoma, and finished high school there in the early 1980s.

After high school, Tracy moved to Dallas. He worked different jobs, like waiting tables and selling things over the phone. At the same time, he started his acting journey. When he was 20, he moved to Chicago. There, he spent 11 years working with the Steppenwolf Theatre Company and Famous Door. He is still an active member of the Steppenwolf Theatre today.

In 1991, Letts wrote his first play, Killer Joe. It was first performed in Illinois and then in New York City. Since then, Killer Joe has been shown in many countries and translated into 12 languages.

Tracy Letts has done a lot of different things in his career. He writes plays, acts on stage, and appears in movies and TV shows.

Writing for the Stage

Letts has written more than ten plays. His most famous play is August: Osage County. It first opened in Chicago in 2007 and then moved to Broadway in New York. The Broadway show was a huge success, running for 648 performances. It won six Tony Awards, including Best Play, and also earned Letts the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2008.

Some of his other well-known plays include Killer Joe, Bug, Man from Nebraska, Superior Donuts, and The Minutes. He was also a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Man from Nebraska and The Minutes.

Acting on Stage

Tracy Letts has acted in many plays with the Steppenwolf Theatre Company since 1988. He performed in plays like Picasso at the Lapin Agile and American Buffalo.

In 2012, he made his acting debut on Broadway in a play called Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?. He played the character George and received great reviews. This role won him the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play. He has also acted in other Broadway shows like The Realistic Joneses, All My Sons, and The Minutes. It was special when he acted in The Minutes because it was a play he had written himself!

Acting in Movies and TV Shows

Tracy Letts is also a familiar face in movies and on television. In TV, he played Senator Andrew Lockhart in the show Homeland. He was also Nick, a pyramid-scheme con artist, in the HBO comedy Divorce. In 2018, he joined the cast of The Sinner. More recently, he played Jack McKinney in the 2022 series Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty.

In movies, Letts has starred in many different films. In 2017, he was in three popular movies: The Lovers, Lady Bird, and The Post. For Lady Bird, he was nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award with the rest of the cast. In 2019, he played Henry Ford II in Ford v Ferrari and Mr. Dashwood in Little Women. Both of these movies were nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars.

Letts has also turned three of his own plays into movies: Bug, Killer Joe, and August: Osage County. He also wrote the movie script for the 2021 Netflix film The Woman in the Window.

Tracy Letts married actress Carrie Coon in September 2013. They have two children together, born in 2018 and 2021. He was once engaged to actress Sarah Paulson.
