Carrie Alexandra Coon (born January 24, 1981) is an American actress. She is known for playing interesting and complex characters in movies, TV shows, and plays. Carrie has won a Critics' Choice Television Award and has been nominated for three Primetime Emmy Awards and a Tony Award.
On television, she became well-known for her role as Nora Durst in the HBO drama series The Leftovers (2014–2017). She was nominated for an Emmy for her role as Gloria Burgle in the third season of the show Fargo (2017). She also received Emmy nominations for playing Bertha Russell in The Gilded Age (2022–) and Laurie Duffy in The White Lotus (2025).
Carrie Coon's first movie was Gone Girl (2014). She has also appeared in films like The Post (2017), Widows (2018), and The Nest (2020). She played Proxima Midnight in the superhero movie Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Callie Spengler in Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021) and its sequel, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024). On stage, Carrie made her Broadway debut in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (2012), which earned her a nomination for a Tony Award.

Early Life and Education
Carrie Alexandra Coon was born in Copley, Ohio, on January 24, 1981. Her parents are Paula and John Coon. She has an older sister, an older brother, and two younger brothers.
Carrie finished Copley High School in 1999. She then went to the University of Mount Union, where she earned a degree in English and Spanish in 2003. In 2006, she received her master's degree in acting from the University of Wisconsin–Madison.
Acting Career
Starting Out in Theater
Carrie Coon began her acting career in local theaters. After college, she joined the Madison Repertory Theatre. Her first professional play was Our Town. She then worked with the American Players Theatre for four seasons.
In 2008, Carrie moved to Chicago. She performed in many plays there and in Milwaukee. During these years, she also did motion capture work for a video game company.
Broadway Success
Carrie's big break came in 2010. She was cast as Honey in the play Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? This role led to more parts in Chicago. She then performed the same play in Washington, D.C., and New York City. This was her first time acting on Broadway.
For her performance, she won a Theatre World Award. She was also nominated for a Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play. Critics praised her acting, calling her performance "sensitive" and "fragile."
Moving to Film and TV
Carrie Coon first appeared on screen in a TV show called The Playboy Club in 2011. She also had guest roles in other TV series like Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.
After her Tony Award nomination, Carrie was cast in the HBO drama series The Leftovers in 2014. That same year, she made her movie debut in Gone Girl, directed by David Fincher.
In 2015, Carrie starred in an Off-Broadway play called Placebo. She also worked on a play written by her husband, Tracy Letts, called Mary Page Marlowe.

In January 2024, Carrie joined the cast of the third season of The White Lotus, which premiered in February 2025. She also starred in the family drama His Three Daughters (2023) alongside Elizabeth Olsen. This film was released on Netflix in September 2024.
Personal Life
Carrie Coon married actor and playwright Tracy Letts in 2013. They have two children: a son born in 2018 and a daughter born in 2021.
