History of Trafalgar Day
The Navy League was formed in 1894. This group helped make Trafalgar Day more popular. Big celebrations were held in Trafalgar Square in London in 1896. People across the British Empire celebrated with parades and dinners.
Trafalgar Day is still celebrated by navies in the Commonwealth of Nations. After World War I ended in 1918, public celebrations became less common. People started to see war as a sad event, not just about glorious victories. A new day, Armistice Day (now Remembrance Day), was created on November 11th to remember those lost in war.
In 2005, it was the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar. The Royal Navy held big events called Trafalgar 200. A large International Fleet Review took place off Spithead on June 28th. It was the biggest naval review since 1977.
What is Trafalgar Night?
Every year on October 21st, officers in the Royal Navy have a special dinner. This dinner is called Trafalgar Night. It celebrates the victory at the Battle of Trafalgar.
During the dinner, a special guest usually gives a speech. The speech ends with a toast to "The Immortal Memory ...". This toast honors Admiral Lord Nelson and those who fought with him. On October 21, 2005, Queen Elizabeth II gave the traditional toast. She said: "The Immortal Memory of Lord Nelson and those who fell with him."
These dinners also happen in other places, not just on Royal Navy ships. For example, the Royal Naval Museum in Portsmouth holds a Trafalgar Night Dinner. The British ambassador in Washington also hosts a dinner. A senior officer from the United States Navy might be the guest of honor there.
British Celebrations
The Sea Cadet Corps in the United Kingdom holds a parade each year. It's called the National Trafalgar Day Parade. It takes place in Trafalgar Square on the closest Sunday to October 21st. Sea Cadets from all over the country join in.
The city of Birmingham also celebrates this day. They have a ceremony at the statue of Lord Nelson. This statue is the oldest one of Nelson in the United Kingdom. The Lord Mayor of Birmingham leads the ceremony. Members of the navy, Sea Cadets, and other groups take part. They lay wreaths of flowers at the statue. Then, a parade marches to Victoria Square.
In Edinburgh, there is a Nelson Monument on Calton Hill. If the weather is good, they fly a special flag signal on Trafalgar Day. This signal spells out Nelson's famous message: "England expects that every man will do his duty." The monument also has a time ball that drops every day at 1 o'clock.
The village of Dervock in Northern Ireland has a unique memorial. It's a stained-glass window showing Admiral Lord Nelson. This window shows him just before he was killed on HMS Victory in 1805. In 2015, the people of Dervock held their first Trafalgar Day celebration.
In Gibraltar, a Trafalgar Day service takes place at the Trafalgar Cemetery. A naval commander reads from the Gibraltar Chronicle newspaper. This newspaper was the first to report on the battle. Some sailors who were hurt at Trafalgar are buried in this cemetery. Nelson's ship, HMS Victory, was repaired in Gibraltar after the battle.
On the Isle of Man, John Quilliam is buried. He was the First Lieutenant of HMS Victory in 1805. An annual parade and church service happen on Trafalgar Day in his honor.
