Traverse is a small, quiet place in Nicollet County, Minnesota, in the United States. It's called an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government. Traverse is located in Traverse Township, close to the city of St. Peter.
You can find Traverse along Nicollet County Road 15. It's also near where County Roads 19 and 40 meet. A very important historical spot, the Traverse des Sioux Historic Site, is also nearby.
History of Traverse
The area known as Traverse was first mapped out in 1852. This process of mapping and dividing land into lots is called platting.
The name "Traverse" comes from an older, longer name: Travers des Sioux. This French phrase means "crossing of the Sioux." It likely refers to a place where the Sioux people (a group of Native Americans) used to cross a river or land.
A post office, which is a place where mail is sent and received, was opened in Travers des Sioux in 1853. Later, in 1896, the name was made shorter to just "Traverse." The post office eventually closed its doors in 1915.
