Treguaco, also spelled as Trehuaco, is a city and commune in Chile. It is located in the Itata Province within the Ñuble Region. The commune covers an area of 313.1 square kilometers (about 120.9 square miles).

What is Treguaco Like?
Population and People
According to the 2002 Census, Treguaco commune had 5,296 people living there. About 1,245 people (23.5%) lived in urban areas, which are like cities or towns. The remaining 4,051 people (76.5%) lived in rural areas, which are countryside areas.
In 2002, there were 2,788 men and 2,508 women in the commune. The total number of people in Treguaco went down by 6% between 1992 and 2002. This means about 341 fewer people lived there during that time.
People from Treguaco have special names. A man from Treguaco is called a Trehuaquino. A woman from Treguaco is called a Trehuaquina.
How is Treguaco Governed?
Local Government
Treguaco is a commune, which is a local government area in Chile. It is managed by a municipal council. The council is led by an alcalde, who is like a mayor. The alcalde is chosen directly by the people every four years.
From 2008 to 2012, the alcalde was Luis Cuevas Iarra. He was an Independent politician. The council members who worked with him were:
- Juan Cabrera Monsalve (from the Humanist Party)
- Olga Osses Klein (from the Independent Democratic Union)
- Gabriel Figueroa Retamal (from the Christian Democrat Party)
- Jaime Torres Barra (from the Christian Democrat Party)
- Juan Carlos Sepúlveda Pedreros (from the Party for Democracy)
- Tamara Valenzuela Fuentealba (from the Socialist Party of Chile)
National Representation
Treguaco is also part of larger areas for national elections. For the Chamber of Deputies, which is like one part of the country's parliament, Treguaco is in the 42nd electoral district. This district includes many other communes like San Fabián, San Carlos, and Quirihue.
For the Senate, which is the other part of Chile's parliament, Treguaco is part of the 13th senatorial constituency. This area is known as Biobío Cordillera.
