Trent Falls is a special place in England where two big rivers, the River Ouse and the River Trent, meet. When they join, they form an even larger river called the Humber. This meeting point is located between Lincolnshire and the East Riding of Yorkshire.

Where the Rivers Meet

The River Ouse flows towards the east, and then it becomes the Humber. The River Trent flows northwards. Just before they meet, the River Trent makes a turn to the east. This turn was mostly created by people, not by nature.

After the First World War, a special wall was built on the western side of the Trent. This wall, called a training wall, helps keep the river channel in a steady place.

Navigating the Waters

The rivers here drop a lot of mud and sand, called silt. Because of this, maps for big ships need to be updated every month. For smaller boats, the river path usually stays the same.

Even with the training wall and a small lighthouse called 'Apex Light', sailing at Trent Falls can be tricky. There are no actual waterfalls. However, the water can flow very fast at certain times, especially during strong tides. The Trent also has a "tidal bore," which is a wave that travels up the river with the incoming tide. This is known as the Trent Aegir.

Boats traveling down one river often have to wait for hours. Sometimes they even have to wait overnight. They might sit on the sand until the tide changes. Then, the incoming tide can carry them up the other river.

Nature and History at Trent Falls

Near Trent Falls, there are interesting places to explore.

Wildlife at Blacktoft Sands

The RSPB has a nature reserve called Blacktoft Sands. It is located just upstream from Trent Falls, on the south bank of the Ouse. This reserve has the largest tidal reedbed in England.

Many different birds visit Blacktoft Sands, about 270 types! Some special birds that live and breed here include bearded tits, bitterns, and marsh harriers. This makes the reserve very important for bird conservation.

Julian's Bower Maze

About a mile east of Trent Falls, on a hill, you can find Julian's Bower. This is an old turf maze, which is a pattern cut into the grass. It is located near the village of Alkborough in Lincolnshire.

People have known about Julian's Bower since at least 1697. However, no one is completely sure why it was created. It remains a bit of a mystery!
