A Look at Trinity Gardens' Past
How Trinity Gardens Got Its Name
Back in 1840, some special land was given to the people in charge of Holy Trinity Church. These people were called trustees, and they included Osmond Gilles, Charles Mann, and James Hurtle Fisher. A person named Pascoe St Leger Grenfell gave them about 40 acres (which is about 160,000 square meters) of land.
This land was known as Glebe lands. This means it was land owned by a church to help support its activities. Because it belonged to Holy Trinity Church, it became known as Trinity Glebe.
From Church Land to Homes
For many years, the land was used by the church. But starting in 1911, the church trustees wanted to sell the Trinity Glebe land so that houses could be built there. There was a problem, though! The original rules for the land, called the 'trust deed', said they couldn't sell it. To change these rules, they needed a special law passed by the government.
So, in 1920, the government (the Parliament) made the necessary change. After that, the land was quickly divided into smaller blocks, which is called 'subdivision'. This new area was officially named 'Trinity Gardens'. A company called Wilkinson, Sando & Wyles Ltd then sold the land for people to build their homes. They even promised to include lots of space for fun activities like tennis, bowls, and croquet!
Post Office History
The area's post office has had a few name changes over the years. Around 1886, a post office opened nearby called North Norwood Post Office. In 1950, its name was changed to Trinity Gardens. Then, in 1963, it changed again to St Morris. That same year, a brand new Trinity Gardens post office opened in the area where the suburb is today.
Local Government and Representation
Trinity Gardens is part of the City of Norwood Payneham St Peters local government area. This is the local council that helps manage things like parks, roads, and community services in the area.
For state government, Trinity Gardens is in the South Australian House of Assembly's Electoral district of Dunstan. This means that when people vote for who represents them in the state government, they vote for someone in the Dunstan area.
For the national government, Trinity Gardens is in the Australian House of Representatives' Division of Sturt. This is similar to the state government, but it's for who represents the area in the country's main Parliament.
