Trout Run is a small stream in Sullivan County, Pennsylvania, in the United States. It flows into East Branch Fishing Creek. The stream is about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) long. It runs through Davidson Township.

The area of land that drains into Trout Run is 0.62 square miles (1.6 km2). This stream is a bit acidic. Experts say it needs help because of pollution from the air and metals. The rocks around the stream include the Catskill Formation and the Huntley Mountain Formation.

Where Does Trout Run Flow?

Trout Run starts on a high, flat area called a plateau in Davidson Township. It first flows northwest for a short distance. Then, it turns southwest and goes into a valley. The stream follows this valley for a while.

After leaving the valley, Trout Run turns southwest again, then south. It flows a short distance more. Finally, it meets East Branch Fishing Creek. Trout Run joins East Branch Fishing Creek about 3.6 miles (5.8 km) upstream from where East Branch Fishing Creek ends.

Does Trout Run Have Tributaries?

Trout Run does not have any named streams flowing into it. However, it does have at least one small, unnamed stream that joins it.

How Healthy Is Trout Run's Water?

The amount of water flowing in Trout Run is usually about 930 gallons per minute. Sometimes, the stream can even dry up completely. The water in Trout Run has about 9.9 milligrams of aluminum per liter. This is measured during normal conditions.

The pH level of Trout Run is usually 5.29. This means the water is acidic. The stream sometimes becomes even more acidic. To make the water healthier, it needs about 8 pounds (3.6 kg) of extra alkalinity each day. This is part of a plan to restore East Branch Fishing Creek.

Trout Run's water quality is considered fair. Improving Trout Run could help East Branch Fishing Creek, but not a lot. One idea to make the water less acidic is to add lime to nearby roads. This would cost about $120,000 for Trout Run and a nearby stream called Lead Run.

About 1.8 miles (2.9 km) of streams in the Trout Run area are considered unhealthy. This is due to pollution from the air and metals.

What Is the Land Like Around Trout Run?

The land where Trout Run meets East Branch Fishing Creek is about 1,112 feet (339 m) above sea level. Where Trout Run begins, the land is higher. It is between 2,240 feet (680 m) and 2,260 feet (690 m) above sea level.

The lower parts of Trout Run flow over rocks from the Catskill Formation. The upper parts of the stream are over rocks from the Huntley Mountain Formation.

The soil near the lower part of Trout Run is mostly Oquaga soil. Some Deep-Wellsboro-Oquaga soil is also nearby. The soil near the upper part of the stream is also Oquaga soil, plus another type. There are also places where rocks stick out of the ground. Most of the soil in the stream's area is very acidic.

Trout Run's Watershed Area

The total area of land that drains water into Trout Run is 0.62 square miles (1.6 km2). There are 1.8 miles (2.9 km) of streams within this area.

Most of Trout Run flows through private land. However, there are several forest trails that run next to the stream and cross it.

History of Trout Run

Efforts to restore Trout Run are part of a bigger plan for East Branch Fishing Creek. This is the seventh step in that plan. The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection has said that Trout Run should be used for aquatic life. This means it should be a good home for water plants and animals.

In 2002, Trout Run was listed as an impaired stream. This means it was not healthy. By December 2011, there were plans to set a limit on pollution for the stream in 2015.
