Troutdale's History
Troutdale became an official town in 1906. This happened when the Virginia Legislature, which is like the state's law-making group, gave it a special charter. It is still an incorporated town today. This means it has its own local government with a council and a mayor.
The town's official boundary is a circle with a 1-mile radius. In 1930, a woman named Carrie Wright was elected as mayor. She might have been the very first female mayor in all of Virginia!

In the year 2000, the first count of people in Troutdale showed a population of 1,230. This was a very big jump from the 192 people counted in 1990. It turned out this number was a mistake. Many people from a prison in Wise County were accidentally counted as living in Troutdale. After fixing the error, the population was much smaller.
As of the census in 2000, there were 79 households and 56 families living in the town. A household is a group of people living in one home. A family is a group of related people living together.
Fun Events in Troutdale
The Troutdale Fire Department puts on a special event called "Troutdale Days." It happens every year on the second Saturday of August. This fun day includes a parade, different contests, entertainment, and lots of food to enjoy!
Famous People from Troutdale
- The American writer Sherwood Anderson spent his summers here starting in 1927. Later in his life, he lived in Troutdale full-time. His home, called Ripshin Farm, is now a National Historic Landmark. This means it's a very important historical place.
