History of Troy, Maine
Troy was first settled around 1801. Back then, it was known as Bridge's Plantation. It officially became a town on February 22, 1812. Its first name as a town was Kingville.
Over the years, its name changed a few times! In 1815, it became Joy. Then, in 1826, it was named Montgomery. Finally, later in 1826, it received its current name, Troy.
Geography and Location
Troy is a town with a total area of about 35.92 square miles (93.03 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 34.92 square miles (90.44 square kilometers), is land. The rest, about 1.00 square mile (2.59 square kilometers), is water.
The main water areas in Troy include Carlton Pond. The town also borders Unity Pond.

Troy is surrounded by several other towns. To the north, you'll find Detroit and Plymouth. To the east is Dixmont. On the southeast, it borders Jackson. To the south is Thorndike. On the southwest, it touches Unity, and to the west, it borders Burnham.
