History of the Golf Club
Donald Trump bought the large property, which was 520 acres, in 2002. Before that, it was known as Lamington Farm. It was also the site of a golf course that was being built but had problems.
The club has 36 holes and was designed by golf course experts Tom Fazio and Tom Fazio II. The first golf course at the club opened in 2004. In 2005, Golf Magazine ranked it as the 73rd best course in the United States. Golf Digest also ranked it highly in 2005 and 2006.
In October 2009, Donald Trump's daughter, Ivanka Trump, had her wedding at the golf club. The club has also hosted major golf events, including the LIV Golf Invitational Series in 2022.
Hosting Major Golf Events
The Trump National Golf Club has been chosen to host important golf tournaments. From July 13 to 16, 2017, it hosted the U.S. Women's Open. This is a very famous golf championship for women. The winner of the 2017 U.S. Women's Open at this club was Park Sung-hyun from South Korea. She won with a score of 277, which was 11 strokes under par.
The Professional Golfers' Association of America had also planned for the club to host the PGA Championship in 2022. However, the PGA of America later decided to move the championship to a different location.
The Club as a Presidential Retreat
When Donald Trump was president, he often used the Trump National Golf Club as a place to stay and work. It became known as the "Summer White House" because he would visit it during the warmer months, usually from May to September.
He used a small cottage at the club as his private home during these visits. The main clubhouse was also used for important meetings with other leaders and officials. This was especially true after he won the 2016 United States presidential election.
In August 2017, the club served as his "working vacation" spot for 17 days. This happened while the White House was being renovated. He also used the estate for similar working vacations in August 2018 and August 2019.
Security Around the Club
When the president stayed at the golf club, special security rules were put in place. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) created temporary flight restrictions. This meant that planes and even model airplanes could not fly within a 30-mile area around the club.
These restrictions affected 19 airports in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Two airports, Solberg–Hunterdon Airport and Somerset Airport, had to close completely because they were very close to the club. The government also spent money to cover the security costs for the club when the president was there.
Land Use and Tax Status
A large part of the golf club's land is used for farming. The club grows hay and raises a small group of goats. Because of this, some parts of the golf course qualify as farmland for tax purposes. This special status can help reduce the amount of property tax the club has to pay.
Trump Family Cemetery
In 2015, Donald Trump received permission to build a family cemetery on the estate. This cemetery includes a classical mausoleum.
Ivana Trump, who was Donald Trump's ex-wife and the mother of Donald Jr., Ivanka, and Eric Trump, was buried in this family cemetery on July 20, 2022.
