The Trump National Golf Club is a private golf club located in Bedminster, New Jersey. It is about 40 miles west of New York City. This club is owned and run by The Trump Organization. It has 36 holes for playing golf.

History of Trump National Golf Club

Donald Trump bought the large 520-acre property in 2002. It cost less than $35 million. Before this, it was known as Lamington Farm. There was also a golf course project that was not doing well.

Designing the Golf Courses

Two golf course designers, Tom Fazio and Tom Fazio II, created the 36-hole club. The first golf course opened in 2004.

Club Recognition and Events

In 2005, Golf Magazine ranked the club as one of the best in the United States. Golf Digest also gave it a high ranking for 2005 and 2006. Donald Trump's daughter, Ivanka Trump, had her wedding at the club in October 2009. In 2012, joining the golf club could cost up to $300,000. The club was also set to host a golf event called the LIV Golf Invitational Series in 2022.

Hosting Major Golf Tournaments

The Trump National Golf Club has hosted big golf events. These events are called "majors."

U.S. Women's Open Championship

The club hosted the U.S. Women's Open golf tournament. This event took place from July 13 to 16, 2017.

PGA Championship Decision

The Professional Golfers' Association of America (PGA) had chosen the course to host the 2022 Men's PGA Championship. This decision was made in 2014. However, on January 10, 2021, the PGA of America changed its mind. They decided to move the 2022 PGA Championship from the club. This decision was made because they felt hosting the tournament there would not be good for the PGA's reputation.

Trump's Use of the Golf Club

Donald Trump used a small building at the club as his private home. His daughter Ivanka and her husband also had a similar building.

Presidential Retreat Location

In November 2016, after Trump became president, the clubhouse was used for meetings. These meetings were part of the Donald Trump presidential transition. Some people thought the resort could become a "Camp David North." In 2017, it became one of three official presidential homes. The other two were Trump Tower in New York and Mar-a-Lago in Florida.

Summer White House Stays

Starting in May 2017, Trump began using the property for weekend trips in the summer. This was when his Florida home, Mar-a-Lago, was closed. He said staying in Bedminster was cheaper and caused less disruption than going to Trump Tower. This made the property known as the "Summer White House" during his presidency. It was usually used from May to September.

In August 2017, the estate was used for a "working vacation" for 17 days. This happened while the White House was being renovated. The estate was again used for a "working vacation" in August 2018 for almost two weeks. Trump also stayed at his golf club for another "working vacation" in August 2019. This was also when the White House was being fixed up. In 2020, Trump visited the golf club several times. On October 1, he held a fundraising event there. Later that day, it was announced that he had tested positive for COVID-19.

Security Measures During Stays

When Trump stayed at his golf club, special flight rules were put in place. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) restricted flights within 30 miles of the club. This affected 19 airports in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Two airports, Solberg Airport and Somerset Airport, had to close completely. They were within 10 miles of the club. Also, model airplanes could not be flown in this 30-mile area.

Because it was an official residence, money was set aside for security costs. Congress approved up to $41 million for security from Trump's inauguration until October 1, 2017.

Trump Family Cemetery

In 2015, Trump received permission to build a family cemetery at the estate. This cemetery would include a classical mausoleum. Trump has said he wants to be buried at the Bedminster golf course. Ivana Trump, Donald Trump's ex-wife, was buried in the Trump family cemetery on July 20, 2022. She was the mother of Donald Trump Jr., Eric Trump, and Ivanka Trump.
