The Eric Trump Foundation

In 2007, Eric Trump started a charity called the Eric Trump Foundation. This organization raised money for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Tennessee. St. Jude is a hospital that helps children with serious illnesses.

In 2012, the foundation promised to raise $20 million over ten years. This money was for a new surgery and ICU center at St. Jude. The center opened in 2015.

By 2016, the foundation and related efforts had raised $16.3 million for St. Jude. This was confirmed by the president of St. Jude's fundraising group.

In December 2016, Eric Trump announced he would stop actively raising money for the foundation. This was to avoid any idea that people were donating to get close to his father, who had won the presidential election.

The foundation's tax records for 2016 showed it received more money than in 2015. It gave a large amount to St. Jude. It also gave smaller amounts to other charities. Some money was paid to Trump family properties for event costs.

Questions About Funds

In June 2017, Forbes magazine reported on how the foundation used its money. The report said that over $1.2 million of donations went to the Trump Organization. This was for using the Westchester golf course. Eric Trump had said his foundation used Trump Organization properties for free. However, the report suggested this was not entirely true.

Golf charity experts said the expenses for a one-day golf tournament seemed very high. A former director of the foundation said they had to cover expenses. The charity had grown, and the Trump Organization could no longer cover all the costs.

Forbes also reported that some money was given to other charities. Many of these were connected to Trump family members or their interests. The Eric Trump Foundation stated that donors were told if their donations would be sent to other groups.

The foundation had advertised that its golf events raised money only for St. Jude. It said 95–100% of the money would go to the hospital. However, public tax records showed that significant amounts of funds were used to pay the Trump Organization for using its facilities. The foundation also gave money to other charities besides St. Jude.

In June 2017, the New York State Attorney General's Office began looking into the Eric Trump Foundation. This was based on the issues raised by the Forbes investigation.
