Tupelo is a small city in Coal County, Oklahoma, United States. In 2020, about 327 people lived there.

History of Tupelo

Tupelo started as a place called Jeffs. A post office opened there on June 28, 1894. Jeffs was named after Jefferson D. Perry, who was the first postmaster.

The post office moved to Tupelo's current spot on October 25, 1900. Its name changed to Tupelo on January 13, 1904. The city of Tupelo was named after Tupelo, Mississippi. That city got its name from the tupelo gum tree.

When Jeffs and later Tupelo were founded, they were part of the Choctaw Nation. This was a large area of land belonging to the Choctaw people.

Geography of Tupelo

Tupelo is located in the western part of Coal County. Oklahoma State Highway 3 goes around the north side of the town. This highway leads southeast to Coalgate, which is the main town of the county. It also goes northwest to Ada.

Another road, State Highway 48, goes right through Tupelo. It leads south to Wapanucka and north to Allen.

The city of Tupelo covers a total area of about 1.1 square kilometers (0.41 square miles). All of this area is land.
