Turnberry Place is a group of tall, fancy apartment buildings located near the Las Vegas Strip in Winchester, Nevada. It has four towers, and each one is 38 stories high, reaching about 477 feet into the sky.
This complex also includes a large club called the Stirling Club. It's about 80,000 square feet and offers many cool things for people who live there and other members.
The idea for Turnberry Place came up in 1998. Building started on the first tower in August 1999. Back then, there weren't many tall apartment buildings in the Las Vegas Valley. So, this project was seen as a bit risky. But when the first tower was finished in 2001, Turnberry Place helped start a big boom in building more apartments in Las Vegas. The other towers were completed in 2002, 2004, and 2006.

Building History
Turnberry Place is a huge project that cost $650 million. It has four tall towers, each with 38 floors and standing 477 feet high. In total, there are 720 apartment units, and each one is quite large, averaging about 3,000 square feet.
The land where Turnberry Place now stands used to be a horse racing track called Thunderbird Downs in the 1960s. A company called Turnberry Associates bought this empty 15-acre property in December 1997. They announced the Turnberry Place project in June 1998.
Construction on the first tower began in August 1999. The apartments were priced from $400,000 up to almost $6 million. A big reason people wanted to buy here was the amazing views from the towers. Most buyers came from other states like Chicago, Miami, New York, and southern California. Many of them were people over 55 who were retired.
A New Idea for Las Vegas
Building tall apartment buildings like Turnberry Place was a new idea for the Las Vegas Valley at the time. There hadn't been many residential high-rises built there since the Regency Towers in 1974. So, Turnberry Place was one of the first new projects of its kind.
The first tower was almost finished by the end of 2000, and work had already started on the second one. The first tower opened in 2001, and the second one followed a year later. When Turnberry Place opened, along with another nearby building called Park Towers, it really inspired a wave of new apartment building projects in the Las Vegas area.
Work on the third tower started in June 2002 and was finished in 2004.
Final Towers and Famous Residents
In October 2004, a sales office was taken down to make room for the fourth tower. Construction on this last tower began at the end of that year. It reached its full height in January 2006, and all 180 apartments in it were already sold. The final tower was completed later that year.
Many well-known people have lived at Turnberry Place, including Alan King, Robert B. Lewis, Joe and Betty Weider, James Caan, Rita Rudner, Lee Majors, Rachel Uchitel, Steve Siegel, Rich Little, and Andy Walmsley.
In 2018, a very expensive apartment on the top floor sold for $5.5 million. This was the highest price paid for an apartment in Las Vegas that year.
Building Challenges
Sometimes, big building projects can have problems. In 2004, some people living in the first tower said there were issues with the building, like rain and wind getting inside.
Also, there was an old hotel nearby called the El Rancho, which had closed in 1992 and looked run down. Turnberry Associates bought this old hotel in 2000 and tore it down. In 2005, they announced plans to build a new resort called the Fontainebleau on that land.
When construction started on the Fontainebleau in 2007, some residents of Turnberry Place were upset. They felt the new building's parking garage was too close and blocked some of their views. A judge eventually decided that the Fontainebleau could continue building as planned. Residents were also worried about more traffic in the area because of the new resort.
The Stirling Club
The Stirling Club, which is 80,000 square feet, was meant to be the main attraction of Turnberry Place. This private club had many features, including a bar, a lounge, a swimming pool, a spa, tennis courts, and a fitness center. It also had a special room for cigars and wine, and a restaurant run by famous chef Charlie Palmer. The club often had singers performing and was a popular spot for celebrities.
Construction on the Stirling Club began in mid-2000. It was built on 3.3 acres right in the middle of the Turnberry Place complex and cost $40 million to create. The club officially opened in late 2001.
Club Challenges and Reopening
The club's daily operations were paid for by monthly fees from Turnberry Place residents. However, after a big economic downturn called the Great Recession, the club started losing money. It eventually closed in May 2012, which meant about 100 people lost their jobs. Most of the club's money came from Turnberry Place residents. The club had 1,300 members in total, including people who didn't live at Turnberry Place but bought memberships.
After it closed, the Stirling Club was put up for sale for $18 million.
In late 2013, a group of business people bought the club for over $10 million. They planned to reopen it eventually. However, this group didn't have a clear plan for how to run the club, and they never reopened it. They felt running the club would take too much time away from their other jobs.
The club was put up for sale again in 2015 and then in 2017. Finally, in 2018, a company called DK Hospitality bought it for almost $12.4 million. This company planned to make many improvements to the club. They added a new spa, a Starbucks, and a fancy convenience store. They also updated the pool, lounge, tennis courts, and event areas.
At the end of 2018, a New Year's Eve party was held to attract new members. The Stirling Club was scheduled to officially reopen in 2019, bringing back this special place for residents and members.
