Tusmore is a friendly suburb located in the eastern part of Adelaide, South Australia. It's a great place with parks and community buildings.

History of Tusmore

Tusmore has an interesting past that dates back many years.

Early Settlement

In 1839, a person named William Rogers moved to this area. He was a pastoralist, which means he raised sheep or cattle. William named his new land Tusmore. He chose this name because it was the same as his birthplace in Oxfordshire, England.

How Streets Got Their Names

Around 1911, the land that is now Tusmore was called Section 291. It was owned by a group called the Colonial Board of Advice of the South Australian Company. This group decided to divide the land into smaller blocks. Many streets in Tusmore are named after the people who were part of this board at that time. These names include Bakewell, Barr-Smith, Brandreth, Fisher, Kennaway, and Stirling.

The Tusmore Post Office

For many years, the Tusmore Post Office was inside the local Council offices. Later, in 1951, a new building was built for the post office. It was located near the corner of Portrush Road and Greenhill Road. Even though this new building was technically in Glenside, it kept the name Tusmore Post Office until 1967.

Fun Places and Buildings

Tusmore has several important places for everyone in the community.

Tusmore Park

One of the best spots is Tusmore Park. This park is so big it's actually in two suburbs, Tusmore and Heathpool! It's a fantastic place for kids and families.

  • It has a public children's paddling pool where you can cool off.
  • There are large grassy areas perfect for playing ball games.
  • You can find five tennis courts if you like to play tennis.
  • There's also a fun children's playground.
  • The park has seating areas and electric barbecues for picnics.
  • First Creek runs through the park, but it's usually dry in summer.
  • A Scout hall is located next to the park on the western side.

The main community buildings are all together on the corner of Portrush Road and Greenhill Road. This complex includes:

  • The Burnside Civic Centre
  • The Council Chambers, where local decisions are made
