A Look at Ubobo's Past
How Ubobo Got Its Name
The town of Ubobo first appeared on a map in 1921. It was set up as a place for soldiers to settle after World War I.
The name "Ubobo" comes from the local railway station. The railway department gave it this name in 1910. People believe it is an Aboriginal word meaning wild arrowroot. The railway station was on the train line that went from Gladstone to Monto.
Early Buildings and Churches
The first school building in Ubobo had an interesting journey. It was first built as the Glassford Creek State School in the late 1800s. Then, it was taken apart and moved to Ubobo. It opened as Ubobo State School on March 23, 1927. A bigger school building was opened in 1932.
Around 1931, Sunday School classes started in the Ubobo Hall. These were organized by a church from Gladstone. In 1934, a man named William Alexander Fancourt McDonald gave land for an Anglican church in Ubobo. This church, called St Luke's Anglican Church, later opened at 4995 Gladstone Monto Road. It is now closed and used for other purposes.
The Boyne Valley branch of the Queensland Country Women's Association (QCWA) started on November 21, 1935. This group helps women in country areas.
Fires and New Halls
On December 24, 1953, the Ubobo Memorial Hall burned down in a fire. A new memorial hall was opened in January 1955.
The QCWA hall in Ubobo officially opened in April 1959. This building also had a history! It was first built in 1914 as the post office in Many Peaks. Later, it moved to Littlemore, a town about 5 kilometers south of Ubobo. There, it became the Littlemore Memorial Hall. The QCWA had been using the old Ubobo Memorial Hall until it was destroyed. So, the QCWA was given the Littlemore Memorial Hall, and it was moved to Ubobo in 1958.
In 1985, another building was moved to Ubobo from Calliope. This building became St Mary's Catholic Church.
The Ubobo Post Office closed its doors on August 4, 1993.
