History of Builyan
The name Builyan comes from an Aboriginal word. It means "stone curlew," which is a type of bird.
The Builyan Cemetery has a long history. It was first set up in 1910. Today, it is recognized as a special historical site by the Gladstone Regional Council.
Builyan State School opened its doors on December 4, 1922. It has been teaching local children for over 100 years.
The Builyan Post Office started on July 1, 1927. Before that, from 1912, it was a "receiving office." This meant it could get mail, but it might not have offered all postal services. The old Post Office building is now a community center. It also provides tourist information for visitors.
The Builyan Hall was built from local timber and opened in August 1950. It has a special dance floor made of spotted gum wood. In October 1954, a big event was held at the hall. About 500 to 600 people gathered to celebrate. This was when the town officially got electricity from the main power grid.
The old Gladstone to Monto railway used to run right through the middle of Builyan.

Fun Things to Do in Builyan
Builyan is a great starting or ending point for outdoor adventures!
Boyne Burnett Inland Rail Trail
The Dawes Range Tunnel section of the Boyne Burnett Inland Rail Trail opened on September 11, 2021. This part of the trail is about 26 kilometers long. It starts at Barrimoon Siding near Kalpowar and ends in Builyan.
This section of the trail is very interesting because it has six old railway tunnels. These tunnels are considered important historical sites. Tunnel Six is especially unique. It is the only place where you can still see 100-year-old rail tracks and "hogback sleepers." Hogback sleepers are special wooden railway ties. They have a rounded top and were carved by hand from strong iron bark trees.
The rail trail also goes past the historic town of Many Peaks. Here, you can see other historical sites. These include the Many Peaks Railway Complex and the Many Peaks Road Bridge. The Rail Trail currently finishes at the railway siding in Builyan. There is a free camping area here. You can also find fresh water and public toilets.
Many Peaks Railway Dam
While not directly on the rail trail, the Many Peaks Railway Dam is worth a visit. You can get there by riding a short distance on a quiet road from Many Peaks. This dam is also a heritage-listed site. At the dam, you will find a new shelter, signs with historical information, and a toilet block. There is also a raised lookout point where you can see the old weir. Please note that there is no drinking water available at the dam.
