Fun Things to See and Do
Uitgeest is famous for its beautiful polder landscape. You can see at least five old windmills here!
A long time ago, in 1550, a clever inventor named Cornelis Corneliszoon was born in Uitgeest. He invented the wind-powered sawmill. This was a huge deal because it used wind to cut wood much faster. Now, there's a special park being built around a sawmill called De Hoop to celebrate this history.
The village also has a very old church. It's a Reformed church that was built way back in the early 1300s! There's also a nice marina by the lake.
Fort Den Ham
Near Uitgeest, you can find Fort along Den Ham. This fort was part of the Stelling van Amsterdam. That was a huge ring of 42 forts built in the 1800s to protect Amsterdam. This whole defense line is so important that it's now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Today, Fort Den Ham is a museum you can visit on Sundays.
Getting Around
Uitgeest has good ways to travel, making it easy to visit or live there.
By Train
Uitgeest has its own train station. On weekdays and Saturdays, four trains an hour stop here. You can get to Amsterdam in about 20 minutes. There are different train routes, some are faster, and some go through really pretty countryside.
By Car
Uitgeest is very close to major highways, the N8/A8 and A9. These roads can get you to Amsterdam in about 15 minutes. In 2010, extra lanes were added to the A9. These "spitsstroken" help make traffic smoother, especially during busy times.
