Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The United Jewish Cemetery is a special place in Cincinnati, Ohio. It is a cemetery for people who follow Reform Judaism, a type of Jewish faith. You can find it at 3400 Montgomery Road in the Evanston neighborhood.

Two Jewish groups, called congregations, started this cemetery. They were Bene Israel and B'nai Jeshurum. The cemetery officially opened in 1862. However, the very first person buried there was Issac Fredrick on February 18, 1850. This was when the land was first made sacred for burials.

Over time, these two congregations grew. They opened or joined with other cemeteries. This made the United Jewish Cemetery (UJC) grow to include six different burial grounds. In 2008, the UJC became part of a bigger group called Jewish Cemeteries of Greater Cincinnati, Inc. This new group brought almost all of the 26 Jewish cemeteries in the area together.

Jewish Civil War Memorial

The Jewish Civil War Memorial is a tall, pointed stone monument called an obelisk. It was finished in 1868. This memorial was first built to honor a Jewish soldier from Cincinnati named Lt. Louis Reitler. He was killed in the American Civil War in 1862. His name is carved on one side of the monument.

Five other Union soldiers from the Civil War are buried nearby. The memorial now also includes the names of Jewish soldiers from the Cincinnati area who died in World War I and World War II.

In 2008, on Memorial Day, the United Jewish Cemetery held a special event to honor its Veterans Memorial again. A Marine Corps Honor Guard was there, and they performed a 21 gun salute. The names of all the brave soldiers who died were read aloud.
