The Universal Hip Hop Parade (UHHP) is a big yearly party held in Bedford–Stuyvesant, a historic neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York City. It happens every year on the Saturday before August 17, which is the birthday of Marcus Garvey. The parade reminds everyone that Marcus Garvey used popular culture to help people and encourage Black institutions.

This parade is the longest celebration of Hip-hop culture in the world! It showcases all the main parts of hip hop. You can see rappers, break dancers, singers, and actors performing. They perform on special floats and also walk along the parade route. You'll also find graffiti artists and deejays showing their skills in different spots.

The parade also features other exciting parts of the community's art and culture. There are stilt walkers, cool motorcycle and van clubs, and amazing graffiti banner displays. You can also enjoy marching bands, sound trucks, and many different dancers. Famous hip-hop legends, elected officials, and community leaders have all joined in the fun.

The parade helps show off the lively neighborhood of Bedford-Stuyvesant. It highlights its art, culture, and growing shopping areas. People from other parts of New York City and visitors come to see it. Local groups show their creativity and promote their services. Businesses along the route play music and give out freebies. Everyone is encouraged to join the parade and be part of the celebration!

The Parade's Story

The Universal Hip Hop Parade was started in 1999. It was founded by Jeffery Kazembe Batts, Charles Barron, Freedom Williams, and many community leaders. They wanted to celebrate the African American cultural and social roots of hip-hop culture. The parade grew out of the work of an earlier group called the Universal Nubian Association (UNA). Organizers from all over the New York metropolitan area decided to hold the UHHP in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn.

In 2007, the parade made a big change. Mike Hollywood Christie, also known as Dj Dr Hollywood, took charge. He helped the organization reach its highest number of viewers. Mike Hollywood Christie was the Parade Chairman from 2007 to 2011 and again from August 2013 to March 2014.

Besides the parade, the nonprofit group Universal Hip-Hop Parade Foundation, Inc. also organizes other events. These include forums, concerts, open-mic nights, and parties throughout the year. The foundation gets its money from private donations and grants. These grants include support from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs. The Brooklyn Arts Council (BAC) helps manage these funds.
