History of Upper Black Eddy
Upper Black Eddy got its name from the Black family. They ran a hotel right on the Delaware River. There was also a "Lower Black Eddy," which is now known as Point Pleasant, Pennsylvania.
Growth of the Village and the Canal
In the early 1800s, the village grew a lot. This happened when the Pennsylvania Canal opened and passed through Upper Black Eddy. Many businesses related to the canal quickly started up. These included a shipyard, places for mules to stay, a general store, and several hotels. The most famous hotel was the Upper Black Eddy Inn. This building later became Chef Tell's Manor House, which closed in 2004 and was taken down in 2010.
The "Candy Bend" Story
The part of the Pennsylvania Canal in Upper Black Eddy was also called "Candy Bend." People say this name came from canal boats throwing coal to residents. In return, the residents would throw candy back to the boats. However, there is no clear proof that this story is true.
Unique Natural Features
Upper Black Eddy has two very interesting natural spots:
Ringing Rocks Park
Ringing Rocks Park is a four-acre (16,000 m²) field of large rocks. Some of these rocks "ring" like a bell when you hit them with a hammer. This park also has Bucks County's tallest waterfall, found on High Rocks Creek.
Nockamixon Cliffs
The Nockamixon Cliffs are 400-foot tall shale cliffs. They look out over the Delaware River. These cliffs are located within the Delaware Canal State Park.
