History of Upsala

The city of Upsala got its name from a city in Sweden called Uppsala. Swedish settlers came to this area and started a post office in 1883. This was the beginning of the city we know today.

Geography of Upsala

Upsala is located in the southwestern part of Morrison County. It is surrounded by Elmdale Township. The main road through the city is Minnesota State Highway 238. This highway is also called Main Street.

You can travel east on Highway 238 for about 5 miles to reach Elmdale. If you go northeast for about 21 miles, you will get to Little Falls. Little Falls is the main city for the county. Going south on Highway 238 will take you to Albany, about 15 miles away.

The city of Upsala covers about 3.24 square miles of land. There is almost no water area within the city limits. The North Two River flows right through the middle of Upsala. This river eventually flows into the famous Mississippi River near Royalton.

Upsala has one school building for all students from kindergarten to 12th grade. About 400 students attend this school. The school first brought together smaller country schools in 1922. The original building was replaced with a new one in 2004.

The school is home to the "Cardinals." For some sports like football, baseball, and track & field, Upsala teams join with Swanville Area Schools. Together, they are known as the Upsala Swanville Area (USA) Patriots.

The Upsala Cardinal boys' basketball team played at the state level in 2011 and 2013. The Upsala girls' basketball team also made it to the state tournament in 2013. The USA Patriot football team also went to the state level in 2012 and 2013.

Students can also join clubs like FFA (Future Farmers of America), Team 4480 UC-Robotics, Drama Club, and Knowledge Bowl.

Upsala Heritage Days

Upsala Heritage Days (UHD) is a special celebration held every year. It takes place during the second week of August. This fun weekend includes many activities for everyone.

You can join a Medallion Hunt, where you search for a hidden treasure. There is also a collector car show to see cool old cars. A 5K race is held for those who like to run. You can enjoy concerts in the park and watch a big parade.
