Ur-Nammu (ruled around 2112 BC β 2094 BC) was a very important king in ancient Mesopotamia. He started the Third Dynasty of Ur, a powerful kingdom in the land of Sumer. This happened after many years when other groups, like the Akkadians and Gutians, were in charge.
Ur-Nammu is best known for building up his state and creating the Code of Ur-Nammu. This was the oldest known set of laws in the world! He was called "King of Ur" and "King of Sumer and Akkad".

Ancient records, like the Sumerian King List, say that Ur-Nammu ruled for 18 years. We know the names for 17 of those years. These names often described a major event that happened that year.
What Did Ur-Nammu Achieve?
Ur-Nammu was a strong leader. He won battles, like taking over Lagash and defeating his old rulers in Uruk. He became a very important ruler in the region. He was officially crowned in Nippur.
He also ordered many buildings to be constructed. He built in cities like Nippur, Larsa, Kish, Adab, and Umma. He was famous for fixing roads and bringing back order after a difficult time.
Ur-Nammu's Famous Law Code
Two of his year names celebrate his legal changes. One year was called "Year in which Ur-Nammu the king put in order the ways (of the people in the country) from below to above." Another was "Year Ur-Nammu made justice in the land." This shows how important his Code of Ur-Nammu was. It was a big step in creating fair rules for everyone.
Building the Great Ziggurat
Ur-Nammu was also responsible for building many ziggurats. These were huge, stepped temples. The most famous one he built is the Great Ziggurat of Ur. It was a massive structure dedicated to the moon god Nanna.
How Did Ur-Nammu Die?
Sadly, Ur-Nammu was killed in a battle against the Gutians. His army left him during the fight. After his death, people thought of him as a god. His son, Shulgi, became the next king. A long poem called "The Death of Ur-Nammu" was written to remember his passing.
