Utowana Lake is a beautiful lake located in the Adirondacks in New York State. It is part of a special group of lakes known as the Eckford Chain.
This lake is connected to other nearby waters. To the east, it links up with Eagle Lake and Blue Mountain Lake. To the west, it connects to the Marion River and Raquette Lake.
Over the years, Utowana Lake has had several interesting owners. In 1867, it was owned by Ned Buntline, a famous adventure writer. Later, in 1888, William West Durant took ownership. He was known for building grand "Great Camps" in the Adirondacks. In 1904, a very successful mining businessman named Berthold Hochschild bought the lake. Today, a large part of the northern shore is still owned by the Hochschild family. This area is part of their special property called the Eagle Nest camp. Other parts of the lake's shore are protected by conservation easements, which means they are kept natural and undeveloped.
