Växjö Municipality is famous for its long-term work on the environment and climate. Since 2007, it has called itself "The Greenest City in Europe." This shows its strong history of caring for the environment and its big plans for a green future. Both citizens and local businesses share this vision.
In 2017, Växjö won the European Green Leaf Award for 2018 from the European Commission. This award goes to cities with fewer than 100,000 people. It recognizes cities that show great results and goals in protecting the environment and promoting green growth.
Key Environmental Actions and Results
Växjö has taken many steps to become a greener city:
- In the early 1970s, Lake Trummen was cleaned up. This was a big success.
- Twenty years later, Lake Växjösjön and Lake Södra Bergundasjön were also cleaned. These lakes had too many nutrients, which harmed their ecosystems.
- By removing mud and extra nutrients, the lakes became healthy again. Today, people can swim in them, and they have lots of wildlife. The goal is to keep improving water quality in all the lakes.
- In the 1980s, Växjö Energi AB (Veab) started using biofuels to heat homes. Their heating plant was the first in Sweden to do this.
- Over the years, this project grew. By 2015, almost all the heat and power in Växjö came from renewable sources.
- In 1996, Växjö Municipality decided to stop using fossil fuels completely by 2030.
- Between 1993 and 2015, carbon dioxide emissions in Växjö dropped by 54%. This happened even while the city's economy grew strong.
- Recently, Växjö has invested a lot in building tall wooden buildings. Today, Växjö is one of the leading cities in Sweden for these types of projects.
International Connections
Växjö Municipality has special connections with other cities around the world. These are called twin towns or sister cities.
