History of Valenciano Abajo
How Puerto Rico Became Part of the U.S.
After the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a special agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898.
Because of this treaty, Puerto Rico became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it's a part of the U.S. but doesn't have all the same rights as a state.
Counting the People in 1899
In 1899, the United States Department of War did a special count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census.
They found that Valenciano Abajo and another barrio nearby, Valenciano Arriba, had a total of 1,206 people living there together. This helps us understand how the population has grown over time.
