About Valentine, Texas
Valentine is the only official town in Jeff Davis County. It was founded on February 14, 1882, by workers building the Southern Pacific Railroad. This is how the town got its name, as it was Valentine's Day.
The U.S. Postal Service in Valentine is special. Every year, people send their Valentine's Day cards there. The post office then puts a special "Valentine's Day" stamp on them before sending them to their final destination.
Prada Marfa Art Installation
A famous art display called Prada Marfa was built near Valentine in 2005. It looks like a Prada store, but it's actually a permanent art sculpture. It is located about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) northwest of Valentine on U.S. Route 90. A local artist named Boyd Elder (1944–2018) helped take care of the art piece.
Where is Valentine Located?
Valentine is in the western part of Jeff Davis County. It sits along U.S. Route 90. This highway connects Valentine to other towns. For example, it's about 38 miles (61 km) northwest to Van Horn. It's also about 35 miles (56 km) southeast to Marfa.
The town itself is in a flat area. To the east, about 15 miles (24 km) away, are the Davis Mountains. To the west, about 11 miles (18 km) away, are the Sierra Vieja mountains. The town covers an area of about 0.49 square miles (1.26 square kilometers), all of which is land.

Getting Around Valentine
Valentine is located on US 90. This highway connects it to other towns. For example, it's 35 miles (58 km) north of Marfa. It's also 40 miles (64 km) south of Van Horn.
The Amtrak train called the Sunset Limited goes through Valentine. However, it does not stop in the town. The closest train stop is in Alpine, about 60 miles (96 km) away.
Education in Valentine
Students in Valentine attend schools in the Valentine Independent School District. For college, all of Jeff Davis County is part of the area served by Odessa College.
Fun in Valentine
Valentine is known for its big Valentine's Day party. People come from all over, even from far-off cities like Chicago, to celebrate. A local brewery from Alpine often hosts the event. They have served free beer and had live music, like Gary P. Nunn playing on stage.
Earthquake History
On August 16, 1931, a strong earthquake happened near Valentine. It was a magnitude 5.8 earthquake. This earthquake caused a lot of damage. It was the most powerful earthquake ever recorded in Texas.
