Valmont's Past
Valmont was officially planned and mapped out in 1865. Its name comes from the valleys and peaks nearby. A post office opened in Valmont in 1865 and stayed open until 1901.
Historic Sites and Land Use
At 63rd Street and Andrus Road, you can find a historic landmark. This was once the Boulder County Poor Farm. It is also believed to be the old location of Fort Chambers. This fort was built in 1854 to protect early settlers. Some soldiers who trained at Fort Chambers were involved in a sad event called the Sand Creek massacre in November 1864.
In 2018, the City of Boulder bought this property. A marker from the 1950s at the site was removed in 2023 because it had incorrect information. The city is now working with local Native American tribes. They plan to develop the 113-acre site with a theme of "Heal the Land; Heal the People."
The Old Valmont School
The Valmont School building on N. 61st Street was built in 1911. It replaced an older school from 1869. The school closed in 1951 and has been empty since the 1980s. In 2021, local business owners bought the building.
The school has a damaged bell tower and roof, which has caused water damage inside. It is one of the few original buildings left in Valmont. A special feature of the school is its decorative concrete block design. People who want to preserve history hope the building can be fixed. However, it is an expensive project. It also needs special approval and skilled workers who know old building methods. In early 2024, the school was added to a list of Colorado’s Most Endangered Places.
Valmont Train History
The Valmont train depot is an old station stop. It was part of the Union Pacific Railroad's Boulder Branch line. This line went from Denver to Boulder, Colorado. The depot was built in 1890. Passenger train service on this line stopped in the 1960s.
For some years, a group called the Boulder Valley Railway Historical Society had a small museum. It was called the Valmont Railroad Museum. It had old locomotives and railcars on unused tracks near Valmont Road and Indian Road. This museum closed down around 2015.
