Van Etten is a small community in Chemung County, New York. It is known as a hamlet and a census-designated place (CDP). This means it's a small settlement that the government counts for population, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town.

It is also part of the Elmira Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is a region with many connected towns and cities.
History of Van Etten
The Van Etten community began around 1798. It was founded by two brothers, James and Joshua Van Etten. At first, the area was called "Halls Corners." Later, it became known as "Van Ettenville."
In 1876, the community officially became a village named "Van Etten." A railroad line reached the village in 1871. This helped connect Van Etten to other places.
In 2017, the people of Van Etten voted to make their village part of the Town of Van Etten again. This change happened at the end of 2018. Even after this, the U.S. Census Bureau still listed Van Etten as a village in their 2019 survey.
