Van Etten is a small town in Chemung County, New York, United States. It is part of the larger Elmira area. In 2020, about 1,541 people lived here. The town is named after two brothers who first started the village of Van Etten within the town. You can find Van Etten in the northeastern part of Chemung County, a bit northeast of Elmira.

A Look Back: History of Van Etten
People first started settling in the Van Etten area around 1794. More permanent homes were built by 1797. The town of Van Etten was officially created in 1854. It was formed from parts of two other towns, Erin and Cayuta.
Later, in 1876, a smaller area within the town became its own separate place called the village of Van Etten. However, in 2017, the people of the village voted to join back with the larger Town of Van Etten. This change happened on December 31, 2018.
Where is Van Etten? Geography
The town of Van Etten covers about 107.7 square kilometers (41.6 square miles). Most of this area is land, with only a small part being water.
The northern edge of the town borders Tompkins County. The eastern side borders Tioga County. Part of the western side borders Schuyler County.
Important roads cross through Van Etten. New York State Route 34 meets New York State Route 224 in the area where the village used to be. A small part of New York State Route 223 is also near the western town line.
