Cayuta is a small town in Schuyler County, New York, United States. In 2020, about 508 people lived there.
The Town of Cayuta is located in the southeastern part of Schuyler County. It is found northeast of the city of Elmira. Cayuta is also part of the larger Elmira area.

History of Cayuta
The first settlers arrived in the Cayuta area around 1798. They helped to build the community.
The town of Cayuta was officially created in 1824. It was formed from a part of the Town of Spencer. At that time, Spencer was in Tioga County. This happened before Schuyler County was even formed!
Later, in 1854, Cayuta grew bigger. Parts of two other towns, Catharine and Erin, were added to it. These towns were then in Chemung County. In the same year, Schuyler County was created, and Cayuta became a part of this new county.
Geography of Cayuta
Cayuta covers a total area of about 20.3 square miles (52.6 square kilometers). All of this area is land.
The town shares its western, southern, and eastern borders with Chemung County. Its northern border is mostly next to Tompkins County.
Cayuta Creek is an important stream that flows through the town. It moves southeast and eventually joins the Susquehanna River.

Places in Cayuta
- Alpine Junction – This is a small community located near the northern border of the town. It is found on New York State Routes 13 and 224.
- Cayuta – This is the main village, also called a hamlet, in the town. It is in the northwestern part of the town on NY-224. This was the very first place settled in the town. Cayuta hamlet is not far from the border of Tompkins County.
