History of Venus, Texas

The town of Venus was first called "Gossip." This was before it started to grow in the late 1880s. A man named J.C. Smythe bought 80 acres of land. This land was once cornfields in Johnson County. He planned a new town and named it "Venus." He chose this name after a local doctor's daughter.

By 1888, Venus had a post office. About 10 people lived there. The town was located where two big railroads met. This helped Venus grow quickly. For a while, it was one of the fastest-growing places in Johnson County. By the 1920s, Venus had its own schools, including a small college. It also had many businesses and a weekly newspaper called the Venus Express. The population grew to over 800 people.

Decline and Recovery

The Great Depression in the 1930s caused big problems for Venus. The town started to shrink. Many people moved to the growing Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex nearby. They were looking for jobs there. By 1940, only 200 people lived in Venus. The only business left was the drug store.

Venus slowly started to get better in the late 1940s. The number of people living there grew to over 300. The town continued to grow slowly through the rest of the 1900s. By 1990, there were 977 residents. The town even spread into nearby Ellis County. In 2000, the population was 910. But by 2010, it more than tripled to 2,960. This big growth happened because the Dallas-Fort Worth area expanded south.

Geography of Venus

Venus is found in the northeastern part of Johnson County. The town covers about 7.7 square kilometers (3.0 square miles) of land. There is no water area within the town limits.
