Verplanck's Point and the Revolutionary War
Verplanck's Point is at the very south end of Verplanck. This spot was very important during the American Revolutionary War. General George Washington and his Continental Army often camped here.
It was a key place for crossing the Hudson River. Soldiers would cross to Stony Point on the west bank. This was part of their journey south to Yorktown, Virginia. At Yorktown, Washington won a major victory in 1781.
In September 1782, the Continental Army camped at Verplanck's Point again. This area was a natural place for armies to gather. It made it easier to move soldiers and supplies across the river.
The famous artist John Trumbull painted a picture called Washington at Verplanck's Point. He gave this painting to Martha Washington. Later, he made a much bigger version of the painting. This larger painting showed Washington reviewing his troops in 1782.
