History of Vershire
The town and a nearby village were called "Ely" starting in 1880. This name came from the Ely Mining Company, which dug for copper in the area.
However, things changed in 1883. About 200 miners took control of the mining plant. They were demanding to be paid money they were owed. To help solve the problem, five groups of the National Guard were called in.
Today, Vershire is home to The Mountain School of Milton Academy. This is a special program for high school students. It allows motivated juniors from all over the country to live and work on a farm while studying.
