Veteran is a town located in Chemung County, New York, United States. In 2020, about 3,363 people lived there. The town was named to honor its first settler, who was a veteran of two wars.
The town is located on the northern edge of Chemung County. It is also north of the city of Elmira.
History of Veteran
The Sullivan Expedition traveled through this area in 1779. This was a military campaign during the American Revolutionary War.
The first person to settle here was Green Bentley. He was a veteran of both the American Revolution and the French and Indian War. He arrived around 1798. The town of Veteran was officially created in 1823. It was formed from a part of the town of Catharine. Catharine later became part of Schuyler County.
The old Chemung Canal used to pass through the town. A canal is a waterway built by people for boats to travel through.
Geography of Veteran
According to government records, the town of Veteran covers a total area of about 99.6 square kilometers (38.5 square miles). Most of this area, about 99.3 square kilometers (38.3 square miles), is land. The remaining 0.4 square kilometers (0.14 square miles) is water.
The northern border of the town is also the border of Schuyler County.

Communities and Places
The Town of Veteran includes several smaller communities and locations:
- Midway – This is a small community located south of Millport. It is found on Route 14 and is next to Catherine Creek.
- Millport – This village is in the northwestern part of the town. It is also on Catherine Creek and Route 14. It used to be called "Millvale."
- Pine Valley – This community is on the western edge of the town, in the southwestern corner. Part of Pine Valley also extends into the town of Catlin.
- Rush Run – This community is in the eastern part of the town. It is located on Route 13.
- Slabtown – A portion of the Slabtown community is located within the southern part of Veteran.
- Sullivanville – This community is northeast of Slabtown, in the southern part of the town. It is on Route 13 and was once known as "Deans Corners."
