Catlin is a small town located in Chemung County, New York, United States. In 2020, about 2,554 people lived there. The town is named after Phineas Catlin, who was a surveyor and a public official. Catlin is in the northwest part of Chemung County, just northwest of the city of Elmira. It is part of the larger Elmira area.

History of Catlin

The land where Catlin is located was first settled around 1816. The town of Catlin was officially formed in 1823. It was created from a larger town called Catharine. Later, in 1835, another town called Dix was formed from the northern part of Catlin. Today, both Catharine and Dix are in a different county, Schuyler County.

Geography of Catlin

Catlin covers a total area of about 38 square miles (98.5 square kilometers). Only a very small part of this area, about 0.03 square miles (0.07 square kilometers), is water.

The town of Catlin shares its northern border with Schuyler County. To the west, it borders Steuben County.

Important roads in the area include New York State Route 14, which runs along the eastern edge of the town. New York State Route 414 is another highway that goes from north to south through the western part of Catlin.

    • A stream that flows along the western border of the town and later joins the Chemung River.
