History of Dix

Dix became a town on April 17, 1835. It was created from a part of the Town of Catlin, even before Schuyler County was officially formed. The town was named after a respected person named John A. Dix.

A very important waterway, the Chemung Canal, was finished in 1833. It linked the southern part of Seneca Lake to the Chemung River. This canal followed the Catharine Creek Valley, right through the eastern side of Dix. Another canal, the Cayuga-Seneca Canal, connected Seneca Lake to the famous Erie Canal, making it easy to transport goods.

Later, in 1842, the area we now know as Watkins Glen became its own village, originally called "Jefferson."
