Villa Frontera, also known as Chacalluta, is a small village in Chile. It is located in the Arica Province, which is part of the Arica and Parinacota Region.
Where is Villa Frontera Located?
Villa Frontera sits right on the coast of the Pacific Ocean. It is also on the northern side of the Lluta River. This village is the very last settlement along Chile's coast before you reach the border with Peru. Its name, Villa Frontera, actually means frontier town in English. A beach called Playa Las Machas stretches from the village south towards the city of Arica.
People and Economy in Villa Frontera
Between 2002 and 2017, the number of people living in Villa Frontera grew quite a bit. The population increased from 370 to 870 residents. Because the village is close to the border and has good roads connecting it to the rest of Chile, a large area for storage buildings, called warehouses, has grown up east of the village.
Getting Around Villa Frontera
Villa Frontera is an important spot for travel. It is where two major roads meet: Chile Route 5, which is part of the famous Pan-American highway, and Chile Route 11. The Chacalluta International Airport is also very close by, located between the village and the Peruvian border. The city of Arica, about 6 kilometers (less than 4 miles) to the south, has the closest port for ships. A train track, the Tacna-Arica Railway, goes through the village, but there is no train station here, and the train line stopped running in 2012.
