Story of Vivo
In Havana, Cuba, a man named Andrés Hernández and his pet kinkajou, Vivo, love to play music together. They perform in the town plaza. One day, Andrés gets a letter from his old friend, Marta Sandoval. She is a singer and is retiring from music.
Marta invites Andrés to meet her in Miami. She will be at the Mambo Cabana. Andrés wants to finally tell Marta he loves her. He wrote a song just for her. Vivo is happy with their life in Cuba and is not sure about the trip.
Sadly, Andrés passes away in his sleep. A funeral is held in the plaza. Andrés' niece-in-law, Rosa, and her daughter, Gabi, attend. They then head back to their home in Key West, Florida.
Vivo feels bad about not helping Andrés earlier. He promises to make sure Marta hears Andrés' song. Vivo hides in Gabi and Rosa's luggage. He travels with them to Key West. Gabi finds Vivo and agrees to help him. She wants to deliver Andrés' song to Marta.
Gabi and Vivo buy bus tickets to Miami. They pretend to go to a cookie sale. But they are stopped by the Sand Dollars. This is a group of girl scouts. They want Vivo to get a vaccine. Gabi and Vivo escape but miss their bus. They end up in the Everglades. A big rainstorm separates them. They also lose the song.
While looking for Gabi, Vivo meets a roseate spoonbill named Dancarino. Dancarino has trouble finding love. Vivo helps him win the heart of Valentina. Later, Dancarino and Valentina save Vivo from a Burmese python named Lutador.
Meanwhile, Gabi finds out the Sand Dollars followed her. They have Andrés' song. They will only give it back if she leads them to Vivo. Lutador attacks the girls. Vivo saves them, but the song gets ruined. Vivo feels sad and thinks about going back to Cuba.
Then, Vivo realizes he and Gabi can recreate the song. He knows the tune, and Gabi knows the words. Together, they make it to Miami. They look for Marta. Marta has heard about Andrés' passing. She refuses to go on stage.
Gabi and Vivo sneak into the Mambo Cabana. Gabi cannot get in and tells Vivo to go alone. Security catches Gabi, and her mother gets angry. Vivo finds Marta, who is sad. She recognizes Vivo from Andrés' obituary photo. Vivo gives her the song. Marta is very touched. She feels better and decides to perform.
Vivo finds Gabi and Rosa, who are arguing. Gabi cries and says she helped Vivo because she misses her father. She never told him she loved him before he passed away. Rosa comforts Gabi. She tells her that her father loved her very much. Rosa drives Gabi and Vivo back to the concert. They arrive just in time to hear Marta play Andrés' song. Vivo decides to stay in Florida with Gabi and Rosa. Gabi and Vivo then put on their own show in the city. They entertain the crowd with Marta.

Making the Movie
How the Idea Started
The idea for Vivo began in 2010. DreamWorks Animation first talked to Lin-Manuel Miranda about it. This was after his musical In the Heights became popular. But DreamWorks stopped working on the project in 2015.
On December 14, 2016, Sony Pictures Animation took over the project. They named it Vivo. The story was an original idea by Peter Barsocchini. Kirk DeMicco became the director. Lisa Stewart produced the film. Quiara Alegría Hudes wrote the screenplay. The main animation was done by Sony Pictures Imageworks. The voice cast was announced on April 26, 2021.
Music in Vivo
Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote 11 songs for the film. His long-time helper, Alex Lacamoire, composed the film's background music. He also helped produce all the music. The movie's soundtrack includes a song called "My Own Drum (Remix)". It is performed by Ynairaly Simo and Missy Elliott.
Release of Vivo
The film was first planned for a theater release on December 18, 2020. The date changed a few times. Finally, on April 26, 2021, Sony decided not to release it in theaters widely. Instead, they sold the rights to Netflix.
Vivo was shown in a few select theaters on July 30, 2021. It was then released digitally on Netflix on August 6, 2021. The movie received mostly good reviews. People liked the animation, the voice acting, and the songs.
Watching at Home
Vivo became available on Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital HD on August 9, 2022. Sony Pictures Home Entertainment released it.
