Voyager Point is a small suburb located in South Western Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. It's about 27 kilometres (or a 35-minute drive) south of the main city area of Sydney. This suburb is part of the City of Liverpool local government area.

Voyager Point is surrounded by just a few other suburbs: Sandy Point, Holsworthy, and Pleasure Point. Across the Georges River, you'll find Milperra, Panania, and East Hills. In 2016, about 1,668 people lived in Voyager Point.

What's the Story of Voyager Point?

Voyager Point got its name from a special park. This park was created to remember a sad event: the loss of the HMAS Voyager. This was a Navy ship that sank in February 1964 after it crashed with another ship, the HMAS Melbourne. Sadly, 82 lives were lost in that accident.

Before it was called Voyager Point, this area was known as the East Hills Naval Estate. It had about 70 homes for families of people in the Royal Australian Navy. From 1954, this suburb also welcomed many refugees. These were people who had left difficult situations and found a new home in Australia.

Old Places in Voyager Point

Voyager Point has some places that are important because of their history. These are called heritage-listed sites. One example is the Creekwood Reserve, which includes the Lucas Watermills Archaeological Sites. These sites show us how people used to live and work a long time ago.

Cool Places and Nature

This area is full of amazing native plants and animals. You can find many walking paths that go through the bushland. There's also a footbridge that crosses the Georges River. This bridge connects Voyager Point to East Hills, which is near Henry Lawson Drive.

The only main road to get into Voyager Point is called The Avenue. It connects the suburb to Heathcote Road.

How Did the Streets Get Their Names?

Many of the first streets in Voyager Point were named after ships from the Second Fleet. This was a group of ships that brought more people to Australia a long time ago. Names like Torch and Pelorus come from these old ships.

Voyager Point is a fairly new suburb. It was built by a company called Delfin Lend Lease. The land it sits on used to be part of the Holsworthy Barracks, which is a military base. Later, in the early 2010s, another part of the suburb was developed in the northwest by Defence Housing Australia.
