WaKeeney is a city in Kansas, United States. It is the main town, also called the county seat, of Trego County, Kansas. In 2020, about 1,799 people lived there.

History of WaKeeney

In 1877, a man named James Keeney bought land where WaKeeney is today. He was a land speculator from Chicago. He and his business partner, Albert Warren, planned out the town in 1878.

They started a community there in 1879. They named it WaKeeney by combining parts of their last names: Warren and Keeney. They called it "The Queen City of the High Plains" to attract new people. Many settlers came quickly, but then their crops failed. This caused many people to leave by 1880. By 1882, only a few small stores were left. Later, people from Volga German backgrounds began to settle in the area.

WaKeeney became the county seat (the main town for the county government) in June 1879. It officially became a city in 1880.
