Wabasso is a small community located in Indian River County, Florida, in the United States. It's known as a census-designated place (CDP), which means it's an area defined for counting people, but it doesn't have its own city government.

In 2010, about 609 people lived in Wabasso. By 2020, the population grew to 1,627 people. You can find Wabasso where two main roads meet: U.S. 1 and SR 510. Wabasso is also part of a larger area that includes the towns of Sebastian and Vero Beach.

History of Wabasso

The name "Wabasso" has an interesting origin! A post office opened in Wabasso way back in 1898. The name comes from Ossabaw Island in Georgia, but with the letters spelled backward.

Where is Wabasso Located?

Wabasso is in the northeastern part of Indian River County. It's located at 27°44′48″N 80°26′6″W / 27.74667°N 80.43500°W / 27.74667; -80.43500. To the north of Wabasso, you'll find the town of Sebastian. To the south, there's Winter Beach.

If you travel east from Wabasso, you'll cross the Indian River, which is a tidal river. On the other side is Wabasso Beach. U.S. Route 1 is a major road that runs through Wabasso. It goes about 8 miles (13 km) south to Vero Beach, which is the main city of the county. If you go north on U.S. 1, you'll reach Melbourne, about 26 miles (42 km) away.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the Wabasso area covers about 6.3 square kilometers (2.4 square miles) of land. There is no water area within the CDP itself.

In the year 2000, there were 918 people living in Wabasso. This number changed to 609 people by 2010. However, the population grew quite a bit by 2020, reaching 1,627 people.

Famous People from Wabasso

  • A well-known poet, critic, and essayist named Laura Riding lived in Wabasso for many years. She moved there around 1941 with her husband, Schuyler B. Jackson. She continued to live in Wabasso until she passed away on September 2, 1991.
