Wainscott is a small community called a hamlet in New York. It is part of the Town of East Hampton in Suffolk County. Wainscott is located on the South Fork of Long Island.

A hamlet is a community that is smaller than a village or town. As of the 2020 Census, about 904 people lived in Wainscott. The United States Census Bureau also defines Wainscott as a census-designated place (CDP). This means it's an area grouped together for counting population and statistics.

Discovering Wainscott's Past

Wainscott got its name from a village in England called Wainscott, Kent. Many of the first people who settled in East Hampton came from that area in England. The English village was even mentioned in the famous book Great Expectations by Charles Dickens.

The Historic Wainscott School

The Wainscott School was first started in 1730. For a long time, it was the very last public one-room schoolhouse still open in New York. A one-room school means all grades learned together in one classroom. In 2008, a new building was added to the school.

Wainscott's Neighbors and Features

Wainscott is located right next to the Atlantic Ocean on its southern side. To the west, you'll find the village of Sagaponack. To the east is the village of East Hampton.

Other nearby communities include East Hampton North and Northwest Harbor to the northeast. To the north is the village of Sag Harbor. Finally, to the west (north of Sagaponack) are Noyack and Bridgehampton.

The eastern part of Wainscott is next to Georgica Pond. There's a special area called the Georgica Association on the west side of the pond. This area has a 100-acre (0.40 km2) subdivision. A famous house there, called Kilkare, was built in 1880. This house was even featured in the 2004 movie Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

Wainscott's Connection to TV and Travel

The children's TV show It's a Big Big World was filmed in the industrial park at the East Hampton Airport. This airport is located right in Wainscott.

Wainscott used to have its own train station, the Wainscott railroad station. It was on the Montauk Branch line but closed down in the 1930s.

Community Efforts in Wainscott

In 2020, a group called Citizens For The Preservation of Wainscott started a petition. They wanted the community to become an official village. One main reason for this was to oppose a plan for a new power line. This line would bring electricity from the South Fork Wind Farm to shore at Beach Lane in Wainscott.

The petition was not approved in 2021 by the East Hampton Town Supervisor. This was partly because it only had 19 valid signatures.

Understanding Wainscott's Geography

Wainscott has a total area of about 7.2 square miles (18.7 km2). Most of this area, about 6.7 square miles (17.4 km2), is land. The rest, about 0.50 square miles (1.3 km2), is water.

The landscape in Wainscott is different from nearby East Hampton or Amagansett. It is mostly flat. You can see houses next to large fields where potatoes or corn are grown. These fields then lead to the sand dunes and the ocean.

Main Street in Wainscott used to have a general store and a post office. The post office later moved to a new building on Montauk Highway. The old post office building became a private home. Before 1935, sycamore trees lined Main Street. However, a big hurricane knocked them all down.
